A Beloved Gathering Place Enters a New Chapter - The Commons at Calabasas

Holly Hatch  |  September 23, 2026

For nearly three decades, The Commons at Calabasas has been one of the city's most recognizable destinations. From dining and shopping to casual afternoons spent strolling the property, the center has become woven into the everyday rhythm of the Calabasas community.

Now, The Commons is changing.

A significant redevelopment is underway, bringing new shops and restaurants, expanded outdoor gathering spaces, and 80 new apartment homes to a portion of the property. Construction began in January 2026, marking the beginning of a new chapter for a destination that has been part of Calabasas since 1998.

A Calabasas Landmark Since 1998

Designed in a Mediterranean-inspired style, The Commons has long offered something beyond a traditional shopping center. Its outdoor layout, restaurants, boutiques, and gathering spaces have helped establish it as one of the places where residents and visitors naturally come together.

Today, the center remains open throughout construction, with existing shops, restaurants, and amenities continuing to operate.

A Major Transformation Is Underway

The changes taking place now are substantial.

The approved redevelopment includes 12 to 14 new shops and restaurants, new pedestrian paseos with wider sidewalks and landscaping, additional greenspace, and 80 new apartment homes. The new residential component will occupy the area where the former movie theater once stood.

The project was revised and scaled down from the original proposal in 2024. The current plan approved by the City of Calabasas calls for 80 residential units and approximately 27,411 square feet of new commercial space.

Construction is expected to continue through fall 2027, although the property's current timeline anticipates some of the new shops and restaurants opening before the entire project is complete.

More Places to Shop, Dine, and Gather

The redevelopment isn't simply about adding buildings. A major focus is creating a more pedestrian-friendly environment.

The planned new area will include landscaped paseos designed for strolling, window shopping, outdoor dining, and connecting with friends and neighbors. A new family-friendly greenspace is also planned for community gatherings, children's events, outdoor movies, and other activities.

That emphasis on gathering is particularly fitting for a destination that has already served as a social hub for Calabasas for decades.

The Commons Today

While construction continues, The Commons remains part of the city's everyday landscape.

Visitors can still shop, dine, meet friends, and enjoy the existing center. The property's goal is to maintain access and minimize disruption throughout construction, with surface parking remaining available and weekend valet service offered near SUGARFISH.

That makes this an interesting moment to experience The Commons. The familiar destination is still here, but the landscape around it is gradually changing.

Looking Toward the Future

The transformation of The Commons reflects the changing way people use mixed-use destinations. The new plan combines retail, restaurants, outdoor gathering areas, and residential living in a way that is intended to create a more connected community experience.

When the project is complete, visitors will encounter a destination that retains much of the character that made The Commons familiar while introducing new opportunities to shop, dine, gather, and live.

For Calabasas, it represents more than a construction project. It is the evolution of one of the city's best-known gathering places.

A New Chapter for a Calabasas Favorite

The Commons at Calabasas has already played an important role in the community for nearly 30 years. Now, as construction moves forward, residents have the opportunity to watch a familiar local landmark take on a new identity.

For longtime Calabasas residents, there is something exciting about seeing a place that has been part of the community evolve while continuing to serve as a destination for gathering, dining, and enjoying time together.

The Commons is changing, but its role in the Calabasas community is continuing to grow.
